Look beyond the leaking end plate

Material around the end of a screw conveyor often triggers an urgent request for a replacement seal. The visible leakage identifies the symptom, but it does not identify the original seal configuration, its condition or the services it needs. Reordering by shaft diameter alone leaves important questions unanswered.

Collect the equipment identification, seal reference and end arrangement before requesting an alternative. Include the material being handled and the operating conditions the supplier asks for. Record whether the proposal replaces the existing arrangement directly or requires changes around the end plate.

A purge connection is part of the installation

KWS describes mechanical shaft seals that use air or inert-gas purging. Its separate literature for split flanged gland seals describes packing rings and an optional purge arrangement using air, nitrogen or grease. These are different configurations; a photograph of the outside housing cannot establish which one is fitted.

For a proposed purged seal, ask what supply, regulation and monitoring the exact assembly requires, and who supplies each item. Confirm whether that utility is available at the installation. Use the manufacturer's application-specific instructions for settings; figures published for another seal are not commissioning values for this conveyor.

Draw the space needed for maintenance

The KWS split gland design is described as allowing access to packing through a split follower without removing the adjacent pillow block bearing. That is a feature of that arrangement, not a promise that every seal can be serviced in place.

Provide the surrounding layout and ask the supplier to show the access and removal requirements of its proposal. Include guards, drive equipment and adjacent structure in that review. A seal that fits the shaft still needs a practical service route, with maintenance performed under the plant's isolation procedures.

Request a configuration record, not a general claim

A useful quotation identifies the housing and sealing materials, shaft interface, purge option if applicable, replacement parts and instructions. Ask which existing dimensions or shaft condition must be checked before approval and which work is excluded. Keep agreed utility requirements with the equipment documents.

The purchasing objective is a defined replacement with understood interfaces. This article does not certify containment, pressure capability or suitability for a particular powder. The original concept diagrams explain the enquiry boundary and do not reproduce a seal manufacturer's internal geometry.

Manufacturer announcements and our analysis are distinguished. Product claims require verification for the specific application.
